Doomsday: Friday, 13 November, A.D. 2026

On 4th of November 1960, the journal Science published a paper titled "Doomsday: Friday, 13 November, A.D. 2026". The authors were Heinz von Foerster (principal author), Patricia M. Mora, and Lawrence W. Amiot. Their research examined the growth of the world's human population and presented a mathematical model to predict its future growth.

The researchers made a surprising mathematical observation:

"If the human population continued growing at the same accelerating rate observed over the previous centuries, their mathematical model predicted that the world's population would approach infinity on 13 November 2026."

In simple terms, their equation suggested that the population would become infinitely large on that date.

However, they were not predicting:
- An asteroid hitting Earth.
- A nuclear war.
- A global pandemic.
- The destruction of the planet.
- A supernatural or religious apocalypse.

Instead, the researchers used historical population data to create a mathematical curve. This curve suggested that the world's population was growing at an accelerating rate rather than increasing by a fixed number each year.

When they extended this curve into the future, the mathematical model produced a result known as a mathematical singularity, which fell in November 2026.
